KLARA LANDRAT. TALLIT PROJECT.

The Tallit Project began in 1998. What began as a random set of photographs, became a 10 year long photo essay which took me to places of historical and emotional importance for me, a journey to unveil their traps and mysteries; transporting me to far flung places and times. Having conflicted feelings about my own family history and heritage, I went on a series of trips to Poland to commune with my ancestors and embrace the past. There, I saw my photographs take on a deeply personal narrative.

“Tallit” comes from an Aramaic word and is used in Jewish religious practices, meaning "shawl”, or a “blanket for the soul”. Tallit became a metaphorical vessel through which I can tell not only my story but all the stories I discover along the way. Tallit Project is a tribute to my family, the Holocaust and to all those who perished in it. It’s a journey to the past that grew out of a search for meaning in my own life and a discovery of its visceral, complex nature.
